Description | 1) Converting Biodiversity into New Drugs: isolation, structure elucidation, synthesis and biosynthesis of biologically active natural products Our research interests include the isolation and structure elucidation of bioactive compounds from microbial, plant and marine matrices. Our objective is to isolate the active components from extracts which show differential activity against a particular tumor cell line or pathogen. 2) Converting Biodiversity into New Biocatalysts: identifying new enzymes with peculiar synthetic capabilities Natural biodiversity enables us to meet the need for identifying new enzymes with peculiar synthetic capabilities. Our objective is to identify these enzymes , which can be made available as selective tools in organic chemistry, from microbial, plant and marine matrices. 3) Biocatalysis-biotransformations in organic synthesis. The aim of this research is the development of microbial whole cell- and enzyme-catalysed processes as sustainable synthetic tools to be used by organic chemists for the production of enantiopure chiral compounds (drugs, pesticides, herbicides, flavours and fragrances). |
